How Safe do you think the World is Today?

John Kerry recently told Congress, we live in "a period of less daily threat to Americans and to people in the world than normally — less deaths, less violent deaths today than through the last century."

Pat Buchanan more or less agreed with him in his recent column.

Well, with all due respect to Pat Buchanan, I think he is missing a very important point.   You cannot judge the safety of the world today just by the number of people who have been killed in recent years.  You must also take into consideration the numbers that could potentially die in the near future.
It is my contention that the world is now a much more dangerous place than it has been since dinosaurs roamed the earth.

For most of the last half of the last century, the world was kept relatively safe by the nuclear standoff between the USA and the USSR.   Both sides had the ability to annihilate the other, along with half the planet, and both sides knew it.  Yes, there was a lot of harsh rhetoric back and forth but the leaders of both sides knew what could happen if they didn’t use a little restraint.

The big danger that must be considered today is the ever increasing number of nuclear powers in the world.   Countries that we know for sure have Nukes are besides the United States are:  Russia, The UK, France, China, Pakistan, India, Israel, and N. Korea.

We also know Iran MAY already have Nukes, and if not, they soon will.  We know that N. Korea has sold long range missile technology to Iran and probably to other Middle Eastern countries.

Compare the relatively safe standoff that existed during the latter part of the last century to today’s situation.   North Korea has the Nuke, long range missiles, and a mentally unstable dictator who is totally unpredictable.  What is to keep him from selling Nukes to other countries?  Are we sure he hasn’t already?

Russia is constantly provoking countries around the world by intentionally flying long range bombers into their airspace.  It appears as though we are on the verge of getting into a ground war with Russia in Ukraine.

My point is; to have that warm and fuzzy feeling that everything is fine and we are safer than we have ever been, is in my opinion overly optimistic to say the least.
