For Zimmerman the legal troubles may not be over. Ben Jealous of the NAACP has gathered well over a million signatures in an attempt to convince the Justice Department to file charges for civil rights violations against Zimmerman. The idea is that when Zimmerman followed and then killed Martin it was racially motivated, and because of that, he was violating Martin’s civil rights.
Interestingly, while his defense did not use “Stand your ground” to defend Zimmerman – they may now use it to fend off a civil suit. Florida’s “Stand your Ground” law states “that a person whose self defense claim is found lawful "is immune from criminal prosecution and civil action for the use of such self defense."
Besides the threat of being hauled back into court, Zimmerman will also be concerned over the course of the next few years about the millions of people who are out to get him because they believe he was unjustly acquitted. He is in a no-win situation.
